Interview with DJ Platypus from Tootsie's: The Largest Strip Club in the World

We recently had the chance to sit down with DJ Platypus, the mastermind behind the music at Tootsie's, the largest strip club in the world. Known for his infectious energy and ability to keep the party going until the early hours, DJ Platypus shares his approach to music, entertaining, and staying ahead of trends in the ever-evolving club scene.

Q: How do you handle guest requests for specific songs, especially when they might not fit the vibe of the club or the entertainer's routine?

DJ Platypus: “I always do my best to explain our request policy. We can’t just compromise the entertainment for the sake of making everyone happy. The reality is, you can’t please everyone with music, people have such different tastes. With over 200 entertainers rotating in and out, it’s practically impossible to cater to every request or go off-script.” 

Q: How do you ensure each entertainer gets fair exposure on the main stage while maintaining the flow of the evening?

DJ Platypus: “Lights, camera, action!!! The DJ's job is to add to the entertainer's energy on stage. The music and lights accent the entertainer but the DJ's voice and overall energy keeps each entertainer on a level playing field.”

Q: What's your process for building a playlist that keeps the energy high but also accommodates diverse tastes among guests and entertainers?

DJ Platypus: “I try to stay current with the music while adding hits from the years prior. We have an open format, this gives the DJ an opportunity to play a little something for everyone. There is always an "IT" song. I try to build up to that song. Usually that "It" song hits a huge demographic.” 

Q: How do you collaborate with entertainers to ensure the music enhances their performances and helps them connect with the crowd?

DJ Platypus: “With so many entertainers on rotation, it’s tough for them to pick their music, but I always do my best to match their energy with the right song. If an entertainer is bringing high-energy moves to the stage, I’ll complement that with a fast-paced track. It’s about helping them connect with the crowd and keeping the energy up.” 

Q: The music industry and club scene are constantly evolving. How do you stay ahead of trends and ensure your sets remain fresh and relevant?

DJ Platypus: “I don’t take a week off, new music drops every Friday, and I make it a point to be on top of it. It’s extra hours, but that’s what separates a good DJ from a great one. I also listen to mixes from club DJs to see what they’re doing with their playlists. The gentleman’s club scene is different from a nightclub, but you can learn a lot from listening to those playlists.”

Q: For aspiring DJs who look up to you, what advice would you give them about breaking into the adult entertainment industry and thriving in such a unique role?

DJ Platypus: “First and foremost, approach it like a professional. This isn’t a social club; it’s your job. Be prepared to wear many hats, not just as a DJ but also as an emcee. Leave the ego at the door, learn the craft, and understand that your role is to make the entertainers shine. If you can do that while promoting your brand, you’re on the right track.”
